Although I do approach my work with an end result in mind, my greatest pleasure in producing it is the analytical process I go through. For me each piece is an individual study as I decipher which methods I will use, what the mathematical proportions should be used, what design theme is appropriate and what colors will produce the greatest emotional response from the viewer considering the particular use and placement of that piece.
I incorporate many techniques in my work most notably, my system of color combining based on Fibonacci’s mathematical number sequencing and the Golden Ratio. Also, In addition to using commercial and hand dyed fabrics for their obvious interest, I widely include my exclusive hand painted fabrics used as background texture and foreground realism. I use my computer to print text and designs onto fabric and have originated a technique of molding wool felt into antique butter molds to create reliefed pieces that I stitch into my artwork. I use various methods of traditional construction and embellishment including hand quilting, hand embroidering, hand stenciling and hand crafting buttons & decorative beads.
In this varied way, it is hard to define what my “artistic style” is. But since my commissions have been executed in this modern time, it could be said that my work is Contemporary Folk, embracing the rich traditions of the craft of textiles while incorporating more modern techniques and contemporary styling as my clients have dictated. The further I go down this path of artistic expression the more rich my future life becomes embellished with the exercises of using our past.
